Copyright & Usage Policy

Last updated: 29 August 2026

Reading Rocks creates and supplies educational resources for learners, parents, teachers and tutors. This Copyright & Usage Policy explains the permitted use of Reading Rocks digital products and the restrictions that apply to copying, sharing, resale and distribution.

This policy forms part of the Reading Rocks Terms & Conditions.

1. Copyright ownership

Unless otherwise stated, copyright and other intellectual-property rights in original Reading Rocks material belong to Reading Rocks and/or the relevant lawful rights holder.

Protected Reading Rocks material may include original:

  • written explanations and summaries;
  • exercises and questions;
  • memorandums and answer guides;
  • worksheets and workbooks;
  • study guides;
  • compilations and arrangements of educational content;
  • graphics and illustrations created for Reading Rocks;
  • page layouts and product presentation;
  • Reading Rocks branding, logos and design elements.

Purchasing a Reading Rocks product does not transfer ownership of the copyright to the purchaser.

2. Third-party material

Reading Rocks does not claim ownership of third-party intellectual property.

Names, trademarks, prescribed works, textbooks, publisher names, curriculum documents and other third-party materials remain subject to the rights of their respective owners.

Where Reading Rocks lawfully refers to or quotes from another source, such use does not transfer ownership of that source to Reading Rocks.

3. Standard individual-use licence

Unless a product page expressly states that a different licence applies, purchase of a Reading Rocks digital product grants the purchaser a limited, non-exclusive and non-transferable licence for lawful personal or educational use.

A standard purchase generally permits the purchaser to:

  • download and retain the purchased file;
  • print a reasonable copy for the intended learner or permitted user;
  • use the product for personal study and revision;
  • allow a parent or guardian to assist the intended learner using the material;
  • use the material as a reference during individual tutoring or teaching preparation.

The licence applies to the purchased product only and does not include ownership of the underlying copyright.

4. What is not permitted

Unless Reading Rocks has given written permission or the use is otherwise permitted by law, a purchaser may not:

  • forward or distribute the complete PDF to other people;
  • upload the product to a WhatsApp group;
  • upload the product to Facebook, Telegram or another social-media platform;
  • place the product in a shared Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or similar folder for multiple users;
  • upload the product to a school, class or tutoring-centre shared drive;
  • email copies to unrelated learners, parents, teachers or tutors;
  • sell or resell the digital file;
  • sell photocopies or printed copies;
  • reproduce the product for commercial distribution;
  • remove or conceal Reading Rocks copyright notices or branding;
  • claim the material as their own work;
  • modify the product and then sell or distribute the modified version;
  • extract substantial portions of a Reading Rocks product to create a competing commercial resource;
  • make the product available on another website or online marketplace.

5. Parents and households

A parent or guardian who purchases material for a learner may use the purchased product to assist that learner.

A standard purchase does not automatically grant a licence to distribute copies to other households, friends, classmates or unrelated learners.

6. Teachers and tutors

A teacher or tutor may purchase a Reading Rocks product for their own reference, preparation or use while providing instruction.

A standard individual licence does not, by itself, grant permission to:

  • photocopy the complete resource for an entire class;
  • email the full PDF to a class;
  • place the full PDF on a school learning platform for general access;
  • distribute the product among several tutors or teachers;
  • provide permanent digital copies to multiple learners.

Where a product is specifically advertised with broader classroom, school, tutoring-centre or institutional usage rights, the licence stated for that product will apply.

7. Printing

A purchaser may print the reasonable copies permitted by the applicable product licence.

Printing a purchased product does not create a right to reproduce and sell printed copies or distribute them to people who are not covered by the licence.

8. Digital sharing

Digital files can be copied very easily. For this reason, permission to download a Reading Rocks product does not mean permission to redistribute it.

A download link, PDF file or copy supplied to a purchaser is intended only for use permitted by the applicable licence.

Customers should keep their downloaded files and download links reasonably secure.

9. Social media

Customers are welcome to discuss Reading Rocks products or share a reasonable photograph or screenshot for the purpose of showing that they are using or recommending a product, provided that the shared material does not expose substantial educational content or enable another person to reconstruct or use the product without purchasing it.

Uploading complete pages in sufficient quantity to substitute for purchasing the product is not permitted unless authorised by Reading Rocks or permitted by law.

10. Extracts and quotations

Nothing in this policy is intended to prohibit a use that is lawfully permitted under applicable copyright legislation.

South African copyright law contains limited exceptions relating to matters such as private study, research, criticism, review, quotation and certain teaching uses, subject to the requirements of the legislation.

Where an applicable statutory exception permits a particular use, this policy does not remove that right.

11. Educational exceptions

The fact that a use is educational does not automatically mean that unlimited copying or distribution of a commercial educational product is permitted.

South African copyright law includes specific exceptions and conditions relating to education and teaching. The scope of those exceptions depends on the circumstances, purpose and extent of the use.

Customers and institutions remain responsible for ensuring that any copying beyond the Reading Rocks product licence is lawful.

12. Commercial use and resale

Reading Rocks products may not be bought and then resold, repackaged or redistributed as another person’s commercial educational product without written permission.

This includes:

  • reselling the original PDF;
  • selling printed copies;
  • incorporating substantial Reading Rocks content into paid study packs;
  • removing branding and substituting another person’s branding;
  • bundling Reading Rocks files into another paid product or service.

South African copyright law provides remedies where copyright-protected works are reproduced, sold or distributed without the rights holder’s authority in circumstances amounting to infringement.

13. Reading Rocks branding

The Reading Rocks name, logo and visual identity may not be used in a way that suggests another person, school, tutoring service or business is Reading Rocks or has been endorsed by Reading Rocks unless permission has been granted.

A customer may, however, truthfully identify a lawfully purchased product as a Reading Rocks product.

14. Alteration of products

Customers may make personal notes on or annotate their own lawful copy.

A customer may not materially alter a Reading Rocks product and then distribute, publish or sell that altered product as a new resource without appropriate permission.

15. Answer memorandums

Where a product contains an answer memorandum, it forms part of the licensed Reading Rocks product and is subject to the same copyright and usage restrictions.

Teachers and parents should take reasonable care when distributing memorandums where doing so would undermine the purpose of an assessment.

16. Unauthorised distribution

Where Reading Rocks has reasonable evidence that a product has been deliberately resold, publicly distributed or shared outside its permitted licence, Reading Rocks may take reasonable steps to protect its rights, including:

  • contacting the person or platform concerned;
  • requesting removal of unauthorised copies;
  • suspending relevant download access;
  • suspending an account where appropriate;
  • refusing further licences in serious cases;
  • pursuing available legal remedies where necessary.

Any action taken will remain subject to applicable law.

17. Reporting unauthorised copies

If you find a Reading Rocks product being sold or distributed without apparent permission, you may report it to:

info@readingrocks.co.za

Please provide the relevant link, screenshot or other information where possible.

18. Errors and corrections

Reading Rocks may update products to correct errors, improve formatting or reflect relevant educational changes.

A correction or update does not transfer copyright or create a right for the updated product to be redistributed.

19. Permission requests

For permission relating to uses outside the standard licence, contact:

info@readingrocks.co.za

Please explain:

  • which product you wish to use;
  • how many users or learners will receive access;
  • whether the use is personal, classroom, institutional or commercial;
  • whether digital or printed copies will be distributed.

Reading Rocks may grant, refuse or place reasonable conditions on permission, subject to applicable law.

20. Legal rights and exceptions

Nothing in this policy is intended to prevent an act that is expressly permitted by South African copyright law or another applicable law.

The policy regulates the contractual licence granted with Reading Rocks products; it does not override statutory rights and exceptions that cannot lawfully be excluded.
